I am behind on some bills but up-to-date on my mortgage.

When budget counseling alone isn’t enough to put you back in control of your finances, you may want to consider a Debt Management Program (DMP)

In a DMP, the non-profit works with you and your creditors to negotiate and execute an acceptable, affordable repayment plan. Once approved by all involved parties, the DMP is administered directly by the non-profit. You make a monthly deposit to the non-profit, and they disburse the funds to each creditor according to the agreed-upon schedule.

Benefits to you can include lower monthly payments, reduced or waived finance charges, elimination of “delinquent” notices and eventual debt liquidation. Benefits to your creditors include periodic, dependable payments to reduce debt owed and limitation of costly, repeated collection efforts. DMPs have proven to be an excellent way for people struggling under an excessive debt load to regain sound financial health.

Typically a small monthly fee may be charged for the Debt Management Program, based solely on ability to pay. The administering non-profit also asks your creditors to support this service with a voluntary contribution, based on a small percentage of what is remitted to them.
